Bio Oil Review – Does Bio Oil Work?

I’ve mentioned Bio Oil in multiple of my other articles, so I decided to write this Bio Oil Review because I felt like it deserves its own article I should write this Bio Oil
Bio Oil has been the perfect product for me on many occasions and it has helped me through a few different phases of my life. I used it to recover post-acne scars after cystic acne treatment, I used it during my pregnancy to prevent stretch-marks, and currently, I am using it during my postpartum period to tone the skin on my stomach.
Additionally, Bio-Oil is a great product because it has endured safety evaluations with the Regulation of the European Parliament and the Council on Cosmetic Products. The toxicological profile, chemical structure, levels of inclusion, and total level of daily exposure of each ingredient used in Bio-Oil has been evaluated and considered safe for use, including use by pregnant women!
According to 17 surveys around the world posted on Bio-Oil’s official website, their product is the most recommended for scars and stretch-marks by doctors, pharmacists, and midwives.
Bio-Oil is hypoallergic and suitable for all skin types, even sensitive skin!

What is Bio Oil?
Bio-Oil is a combination of plant extracts and vitamins delayed in an oil base. Many of the ingredients in Bio Oil are common in other cosmetic products, but the main reason it is a unique product is that it contains a “breakthrough” ingredient: PurCellin Oil.
PurCellin Oil is a synthetic form of oil produced by uropygial glands (located near the tail feathers) of ducks and other water birds, which helps them to float on water.
PurCellin Oil changes the consistency of Bio-Oil and makes it light and non-greasy. This PurCellin Oil ensures that the skin easily absorbs the benefits of the vitamins and plant extracts in the product!
What Are the Ingredients in Bio Oil?
Bio-Oil is produced in accordance with cGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practice) as required by the World Health Organization. All Bio Oil ingredients are tested for adulteration and microbiological contamination before production, and a sample from each batch that is manufactured is laboratory tested and monitored for over five years.

Does Bio-Oil Work?
Bio-Oil works, let’s start by making that clear. I will go into more specifics below, but if you are wondering “does Bio-Oil work,” this question doesn’t even need to be asked!
On their website, there is a published list of their awards. According to my count, they have 448 awards around the world since their launch in 2002, until 2019!
They are the number one selling brand in Australia, Belgium, Botswana, Canada, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Liechtenstein, Malaysia, Namibia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, Swaziland, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Kingdom, and Zimbabwe.
According to their Amazon page, they claim that they are number one selling multi-use skincare product in 25 countries!
Bio-Oil is very proud of their “breakthrough” ingredient PurCellin Oil.
According to the patent of Swedish Skin Care Inc.,
“The invention provides compositions containing dermaphile oils and methods for their use. Preferred composition contain Purcellin Oil and are useful in treating a wide variety of adverse skin conditions, including disorders manifesting inflammatory and non-inflammatory symptoms and having a variety of etiologies. The compositions are especially useful in treating psoriasis, eczema, acne, surgical scars and sunburn, but are also useful in treating cuts, insect bites, pruritis, cold sores and dry skin”
Furthermore, Bio-Oil also informs us that according to clinical trials, 92% of participants showed an improvement in the appearance of their scars after eight weeks of using Bio-Oil, and 100% of participants showed an improvement in the appearance of their stretch marks.

Bio Oil Uses – How to Use Bio Oil?
Let’s move to the most exciting part of this article, Bio-Oil and its uses!
There are a variety of different ways that you can use Bio-Oil.
For all the uses, the manufacturer retains the same recommendation for usage. To see results, you need to massage Bio-Oil in a circular motion into the desired area twice daily for at least three months.
For new scars, Bio-Oil should be applied only after the wound is healed. Bio-Oil should not be used on open wounds!
Also, it is for external use only, so you must avoid eye contact.
Bio-Oil has a lot of uses. The manufacturer informs us about five uses, but according to the patent of Swedish Skin Care Enc. which I showed above, Purcellin Oil based skincare products are helpful for:
- Psoriasis
- Eczema
- Acne
- Surgical Scars
- Sunburn
They are also useful in treating cuts, insect bites, pruritis, cold sores, and dry skin.
I read that some people use Bio-Oil for their scalp and hair, but I personally never used it for those purposes and I am and not sure if it will work.
Some people are also using Bio-Oil as a make-up remover. I tried it for that purpose, and it worked well!
Here are more specific about how to use Bio Oil:
Bio Oil for Scars
The manufacturer informs us that scars are an essential part of the healing process and a result of an overproduction of collagen at the wound site. Scars go through numerous changes as they mature, but they are permanent.
So, Bio-Oil was formulated to help improve the appearance of scars, but it can never remove them.
However, don’t be upset, since it does a great job of reducing their appearance!
I personally have a cosmetic scar from appendix surgery. It never bothered me, so I did not use Bio-Oil for these purposes, but I used it a lot for preventing stretch-marks on my stomach during my pregnancy, and I later noticed that my appendix scar became less apparent and more blended with my skin!
My scar now looks exactly like the rest of my skin around, the same color and everything. It looks just like a tiny fold on my skin if you are looking super closely!
Bio Oil for Acne Scars
A lot of people wonder if you can use Bio Oil for your face, so I wanted to make sure the benefits of Bio Oil for acne scars got its own section.
In fact, I know you can use Bio Oil for your face because using Bio Oil for acne scars was one of the main reasons I used this product.
I had cystic acne, and when I won “the battle” for acne-free skin (yay!), I was a little depressed that I will still have scars left all over my face. However, Bio-Oil has done its best with making them as tiny and as blended with my skin as possible!
Yes, I still have them, but you need to pay super close attention to see them. Even when there is a shadow on my face, my skin looks pretty even!
It also sped up the process of removing post-acne dark marks!
Bio Oil for Stretch Marks
When the body expands faster than the skin that covers it, the skin tears, which forms a scar. These scars are called “stretch-marks.”
The likelihood of developing stretch marks varies according to age, race, skin type, diet, and hydration of the skin.
The people most prone to develop stretch marks include pregnant women, bodybuilders, young people undergoing sudden growth spurts, and individuals that experience rapid weight gain.
I used this oil twice a day every day during my pregnancy and developed no stretch marks! In fact, my skin looks even better than before pregnancy. My old stretchmarks significantly faded and blended, my skin became more hydrated, and my tone became more even.
It also relieved the itchy skin that pregnancy caused very well!
Bio-Oil was specifically great in my postpartum time because it helped prevent stretch marks on my breasts while breastfeeding.
Bio Oil for Skin Firming
The manufacturer does not list it as one of their effects, but after using Bio-Oil, my skin feels more elastic and has toned faster during my postpartum period.
It’s challenging to get back in shape after childbirth, but I believe this oil has helped me to get back on track faster!
Bio Oil for Uneven Skin Tone
Inconsistent production of melanin causes an uneven skin tone, and there are numerous reasons why it happens. It can be external causes such as excessive exposure to the sun or the use of poor quality skin lightening products; or internal causes, such as hormonal fluctuations released by pregnancy, menopause, or the use of oral contraceptives (and so on).
Bio-Oil helps improve the appearance of uneven skin tones.
After using Bio-Oil, my skin tone significantly improved! Especially while I was using it for my post-acne scars. Overall, I did not expect such a big difference in my skin tone since I did not have any problems with it, but the difference is huge!
Even my husband has made comments about my skin tone looking really good (like if a man noticed something like this, it’s a big difference, lol).
Bio Oil for Aging Skin
Wrinkles are primarily caused by the weakening of collagen and elastin support system in the skin, which is commonly associated with aging.
Bio-Oil contains various ingredients that help to plasticize the skin, making it smoother, softer, and more supple, thereby reducing the appearance of wrinkled skin. It also moisturizes the skin, which improves its texture, tone, and the presence of fine lines and wrinkles.
I cannot make a significant comment on it since I am 25 years old. Still, the appearance of my skin has made a big difference. It just became “more alive” and healthier, a beautiful tone, smooth, without tiny fine lines (because I naturally have very dry skin), and overall my face became started to look less tired and appeared slightly younger.
Bio Oil for Dehydrated Skin
The surface of the skin has an invisible oil layer that functions as a barrier to prevent moisture from escaping. In a dry climate, this lipid layer is often unable to cope, and the skin loses too much moisture. Daily bathing or showering may worsen this by stripping away the lipid layer due to the harsh effects of soap and water.
Bio-Oil is formulated to supplement the skin’s natural oil layer and to help to restore its barrier function of reserving moisture.
Once again, I naturally have very dry skin. On top of that, it is sensitive and allergic. I often had dry patches on my skin, and my skin was cracking from dehydration.
Oils usually caused me breakouts, but Bio-Oil brought my skin back to life without causing me any facial or body breakouts!
After using Bio-Oil regularly, my skin became luxuriously soft and smooth!
How to Apply Bio Oil (How to Use the Bio-Oil Applicator Mitten)
I always used to apply Bio-Oil with just my palm, but at one point when I purchased a new bottle of Bio Oil, it came with a free applicator mitten. I tried to apply the oil directly to the mitten, but it did not give any results. The mitten just absorbed most of the oil.
So, I tried to apply the oil as always, and in the end, rub my skin with the mitten, and I am fully in love with the results!
The applicator mitten removes extra oil, and I feel like the Bio-Oil goes deeper into my skin and spreads evenly through the skin.
I did not find the exact same one, but this one looks even better than the one I have! It comes in a pack of two; a big mitten for the body and a small one for the face! They are washable and reusable!

Why Does Some Bio Oil Have Different Packaging – Fake Packaging?
A lot of bad reviews on Bio-Oil’s Amazon page came because customers think that they received a fake Bio-Oil product. But it’s not true!
I want to warn you that Bio-Oil has two different packages! One is an old design with a big logo on the front, and the new packaging has all the important information on the front.
The company informed us that the formulation of their oil remains the same, but they moved information on the front of the packaging to educate customers “at a glance.” Also, the new packaging is made out of a tamper-proof carton.

Along with the effectiveness of their product, all Bio-Oil Skincare packaging is recyclable, and all paper materials are certified to be in accordance with sustainable forest management practices.
